Captain Planet Foundation Launches Planeteer Alliance To Engage Global Youth To Be Problem Solvers For Our Planet

The bold new program will prepare young people to successfully fight for climate justice in 25+ countries around the world

Captain Planet Foundation has launched Planeteer Alliance, a new program that will directly engage, train, and support young people around the world to be effective advocates for a broad range of environmental issues. For 30 years, Captain Planet Foundation has engaged and empowered youth to be problem solvers for the planet through educational programming and grant-making.

The new program builds on four years of advocacy training that Captain Planet Foundation provided for more than 2,500 young people from 90+ nations around the issue of single-use plastics as part of the Ocean Heroes Network, co-founded with Lonely Whale. Those trained, young environmentalists went on to change single-use plastics policies in their school districts, cities, counties, states, and countries; among many other campaign successes.

The Planeteer Alliance will take on a broader range of issues, but continue to place emphasis on the design and implementation of action plans and campaigns that address the systems and root causes of environmental degradation and injustice. A group of fourteen (14) young climate  activists from seven (7) countries helped design the program and another 25 young environmentalists from 12 countries have signed on to amplify the message and elevate the work of the Planeteer Alliance as program ambassadors.

Young people, ages 10-23, from anywhere on Earth at any stage in their environmental activism are encouraged to join. There is no cost to participate in the virtual programming that will support a wide range of environmental issues, including ocean and freshwater health; climate change; soil and food systems; biodiversity loss; and air quality – all through a lens of intersectional environmentalism.

In the first year, Planeteer Alliance will set out to engage 1,000 young people from 25+ countries around the world in the Alliance; train 500 young people to be effective advocate and leaders for environmental change through virtual Trainings or Deep Dives; engage 30 ambassadors and 10+ NGO partners; as well as develop an intensive policy strategy training for “Plastic Tide Turners” as part of a continuing United Nations Environment Programme partnership.

Since its inception, Captain Planet Foundation has funded 3,300+ hands-on environmental projects with schools and nonprofits that serve children in all 50 U.S. states and in 35 countries internationally. More than 1.6 million children have directly participated in and benefited from these educational projects; and subsequently more than 10.5 million kids have been impacted by such projects. The program introduced today continues that mission on a global scale, intending to serve as an international network of young people who will put their passion and impatience for change into action for the planet.
